Understanding the Mechanisms of Age-Dependent Decline of Intestinal Stem Cell Function
Description: 8. Project Narrative The adult mammalian intestine is one of the first sites of nutrient sensing and is maintained and regenerated by intestinal stem cells (ISCs). Age-associated decline of intestinal stem cells may impair renewal of the intestinal epithelium and predispose the elderly population to infections, digestive disorders and malabsorption. The work in this proposal aims to understand what role nutrient sensing pathways have on intestinal regeneration and whether pharmacological or dietary interventions have therapeutic applications for intestinal homeostasis in the aging population.
