Uso de modelos de equações estruturais para avaliar a relação entre padrões alimentares e obesidade em idosos.

Description: Introduction: In the Brazilian population it is noted that obesity is increasing in all ages particularly in the elderly due to changes in habits and consumption of foods with high energy density. The objective of this study was to reanalyze data from a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) in order to obtain new food patterns from elderly population. Methods: Sociodemographic, morbidities and a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) data were collected from a representative sample of 355 elderly of Botucatu city, São Paulo, Brazil, stratified by the Basic Health Units in the municipality. The data from a FFQ were transformed in daily consumption and only food with at least 40% intake were included in the analysis. Eating patterns were obtained by means of an exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis with principal components method associating them with obesity and demographic variables via Structural Equation Models (SEM)Results: with the data from FFQ, four eating patterns were obtained using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis: healthy, traditional, snacks and weekend meals and mild diet. With a SEM and considering general obesity measured by the Body Mass Index (BMI), being female, younger, hypertensive, diabetic and having lower adherence to the traditional pattern increases the BMI. Additionally, with a SEM and considering central obesity measured by the Waist Circumference (WC), being hypertensive, diabetic and having a lower adherence to the traditional pattern increases the values of WC.Conclusions: Removing the excess of zeroes in the FFQ data, it was possible to obtain well-defined eating patterns by exploratory and confirmatory analysis, and to associate them with obesity through SEM.
