Metformin for chemoprevention of lung cancer in obese subjects at high risk
Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE Despite several ground-breaking advances in the treatment of lung cancer, the overall outlook remains dismal, necessitating the urgent development of preventive therapies. We have observed that use of the anti-diabetic drug metformin is associated with improved lung cancer outcomes selectively in patients who are overweight and obese and have linked this association to metformin-induced immunological changes in both humans and mice. With a clinical trial and mouse experiments, we propose to study if the anti-cancer immune effect of metformin occurs in obese subjects who have a high risk for developing lung cancer occurs so that the drug may be used for cancer prevention.
