Adaptability and Resilience in Aging Adults (ARIAA)
Description: PUBLIC HEALTH RELEVANCE: Persistent pain is a major health concern in older adults and is associated with increased economic, functional, and psychological burden. The urgent need to develop new approaches to pain management in older adults is of critical importance. Resilience has been highlighted as a crucial factor in positive health-related functioning and adaptation to pain. The proposed work will elucidate resilience mechanisms associated with enhanced pain modulatory capacity and will test the efficacy of a targeted resilience intervention in improvement of pain modulation, physiological functioning, and health outcomes in older adults with chronic low back pain. Findings will have strong implications for advancement of pain management strategies in older adult populations.
