Endoplasmic reticulum stress and intestinal inflammation

Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE The proposed research is relevant to public health as it will provide new insights into the way in which intestinal epithelial cells (IEC) regulate the differentiation of T cells into those that protect against or promote intestinal inflammation, such as is observed in inflammatory bowel disease. The proposed studies are relevant to the mission of the NIDDK because they will provide new dimensions on our understanding of Thelper 17 cell devel- opment, deeper insights into how an IEC-associated, unfolded protein response (UPR) regulates CD4+ T cell differentiation, provide the first identification of a novel CD4 T cell subtype in intestinal tissues and determine if a UPR-derived metabolite can be therapeutically co-opted for potential therapeutic use.
