Functional consequences of stem and progenitor cell heterogeneity
Description: OVERALL PROJECT NARRATIVE Blood cell production is the result of distinctive, heterogeneous individual primitive cells collectively generating mature cell offspring and when one of those primitive cells acquires a mutation, we propose that how it will behave depends on features present in the cell of origin and how the mutation affects cell signaling. Specific molecular features of the mutant clone may then provide predictive information about the pathogenic potential of a clone. Further, the metabolic alterations accompanying modified cell behavior can reveal exploitable vulnerabilities to guide testable, low intensity approaches to reducing clonal burden.
