Mitochondrial DNA mutations in the renal cortex to elucidate cell-specific mechanisms of mitochondrial dysfunction in tubules and glomeruli

Description: Project Narrative This study will contribute to the understanding of mitochondrial dysfunction and somatic mitochondrial mutation that occurs with age and with kidney injury. If the hypothesis of this project is proven, somatic mitochondrial mutation will be supported as a link between kidney aging, injury and disease, which will help elucidate what individual and external factors contribute to age-associated kidney disease while identifing potential approaches to modify them. This understanding can be applied to develop strategies that promote successful aging, improve early detection of kidney disease and the quality of life of the elderly population and patients with acute and chronic kidney conditions.
