Foxos in the Regulation of Muscle Microphagy

Description: Project Narrative:   Uncontrolled diabetes in older individuals can decrease muscle size and strength, and is  associated with inefficient energy production in the cellular powerhouses (aka mitochondria).  Our previous work has shown that insulin controls muscle size by turning off FoxO proteins to  control cellular autophagy, or “self- eating”.  The goal of this project is to see if FoxOs also  control the self- eating of mitochondria, or “mitophagy”, which will help us better understand the  connections between diabetes and muscle weakness that may contribute to disability.
