4BetterAging: Reducing Chronic Inflammation in Midlife Adults Through Legume-Based Foods
Description: Chronic inflammation underlies many deadly diseases, and their onset and incidence have been drastically increasing in the past decades. Older people are especially susceptible to these illnesses, which strongly contribute to the decrease of health span. One of the main ways to reduce inflammation and increase overall health in elderly is to improve diet, by including foods such as legumes, which have been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. This study aims to understand the efficacy of different legumes in reducing inflammation; and the impact of legume-based commercial products on the inflammatory response of human gastrointestinal cells (in vitro) and in human metabolism (in vivo) via a partial replacement diet study, where participants will be consuming legume-based products, to assess their health impact. Ultimately, this thesis will contribute to changing dietary habits, impacting society via the improvement of the quality of life of the mid-life adult population.
