Pathophysiology of Biliary Disease
Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE / LAY SUMMARY This project explores how the cholangiocyte epigenome and downstream signaling pathways influence the progression of Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis, a serious liver disease with no effective therapy except liver transplant. We explore the molecular mechanisms that determine if cholangiocytes arrest in the cell cycle (become senescent) or proliferate (resist senescence), and how these two cholangiocyte populations influence the development of fibrosis. If successful, the results could lead to new and effective treatments.
