Structural Annotation of the Human Genome
Description: Project narrative – public health statement The human genome encodes the genetic information required for human development and health. For this information to be used correctly, the genome needs to be folded in intricate three-dimensional structures, and defective folding can lead to many human diseases including cancer, developmental, and metabolic disorders. We will employ recently developed innovative genomic technologies to identify genetic elements encoded in the human genome that control folding of chromosomes, mediate correct chromosome segregation when cells divide, and ensure chromosomes do not become knotted and entangled with each other.
