Pharmacogenomics of Adrenal Suppression with Inhaled Corticosteroids (PhASIC)

Description: Public Health Relevancy This proposed research will establish the molecular mechanisms underlying the response to inhaled corticosteroids and adrenal suppression, a potentially severe adverse effect of corticosteroid therapy, in asthma patients. This proposal has the potential to generate a significant clinical impact through the identification of asthma patients who would either benefit from switching to alternative treatment(s), or who may require more intensive monitoring of adrenal function to avoid adrenal suppression. Ultimately, this research has the promise to revolutionize asthma treatment, help to offset the mounting costs of asthma management, and improve outcomes for patients.
