Scoliosis as a Contributing Factor to Lung Dysfunction and Cardiovascular Disease in Aging Adults

Description: Scoliosis represents a lifelong abnormal three-dimensional curve of the spine. The prevalence of scoliosis increases with age due to muscle weakening, loss of bone density, and/or degenerative changes in the spine. The long-term impact of scoliosis on health outcomes in older adults is not well understood. To address this gap, we will use artificial intelligence methods to screen CT scans for scoliosis cases in an existing study population of older adults. Next, we will study the correlation between adult scoliosis and lung function, pulmonary disease, and cardiovascular disease. Our work will provide important information on the role of scoliosis in the development of health issues in older adults. The long-term goal of our work is to develop improved methods for recognizing and managing these unique health challenges in older adults with scoliosis.
