Mechanisms underlying a decline in neural stem cell migration during aging

Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE Aging causes a decline in neurogenesis and decreased ability for the brain to recover after injury and a better understanding of the processes that underlie this change would reveal new therapeutic targets which could be used to ameliorating age-related decline in stroke recovery, cognitive decline, and Alzheimer’s disease. This study is based on unbiased approaches to identify adhesion and migration genes and pathways that change with age that result in defects in neural stem cell adhesion and migration. It will functionally validate and perturb these genes or pathways, with the goal of improving neurogenesis and repair after stroke.
