Older patients' willingness to deprescribe: examination of a Patient Typology and the role of patient-GP relationships

Description: Use of harmful or unnecessary medications in older adults is common and leads to considerable harm including adverse drugs reactions, hospitalisation and mortality. Deprescribing (supervised withdrawal of inappropriate medicines) is considered an essential part of good prescribing but it is not happening in practice as often as it should be. Deprescribing should involve engaged communication with the patient, however, in ‘real life’ clinical practice this can be burdensome. This project will investigate internationally how older adults differ in their attitudes towards medicines, their willingness to deprescribe and decision-making preferences. Patient- and GP-factors that influence deprescribing willingness and communication will be examined quantitatively from the perspectives of older adults and GPs.
