Role of Caveolin-1 in the Maintenance of Blood-retinal Barrier Integrity
Description: Public Health Relevance Statement The CAV1 gene encodes the caveolin-1 protein which is associated with glaucoma, the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. The expression of caveolin-1 is also elevated in retinal inflammatory diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and autoimmune uveitis, but the function of caveolin-1 in the retina remains elusive. Understanding the function of this ocular disease-associated gene is likely to lead to novel therapeutic strategies for inflammatory eye disease.
