Role of Retrotransposon Activity in Neurodegeneration and Alzheimer's Disease
Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE (OVERALL) Retrotransposable elements (RTEs) are virus-like parasites that are permanently embedded in our bodies. We are born with them and we bear the consequences for our entire lives. RTEs are largely deleterious to our health but they are held in check by a variety of defenses. Recent research suggests that these mechanisms fail as we age and the consequent unleashing of RTEs promotes age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. The goal of this program is to study and understand these processes so that we can develop therapies that will cure these devastating neurological disorders.
