Multiparametric Evaluation of osteosarcopeniA diSease Using magnetic Resonance ImagiNG (MEASURING)

Description:
Context and aim of the Research Project:
As people age, many (especially postmenopausal women) experiences weakening muscles (sarcopenia) and bones (osteoporosis). When these occur together, it is called osteosarcopenia (OSP), significantly impacting older adults with increased disability, health issues, and healthcare costs. Current methods to detect OSP early and effectively are limited. Traditionally studied separately, recent evidence highlights the need for simultaneous assessment of bone and muscle health using non-invasive techniques. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) can provide this, but high-quality MRI scans are expensive and technically challenging. This project aims to overcome these barriers by advancing MRI technology using both clinical and lower-cost scanners, making it more affordable and accessible. Following a technical development step, a clinical study will assess these improved MRI techniques in postmenopausal women, comparing healthy individuals, those with osteoporosis, and those experiencing osteosarcopenia, to effectively detect and differentiate these conditions.

Scientific and Societal Context:
OSP is increasingly common as the population ages, leading to higher healthcare burdens. This research provides essential diagnostic tools to identify OSP early, and monitor its progression, allowing better treatment development that will ultimately improve life quality and independence among older adults.
