Regulation of Liver Growth and Function
Description: PUBLIC HEALTH RELEVANCE: The proposed research is relevant to public health because discovery of mechanisms that initiate changes in translational control of hepatic gene expression in response to consumption of excess nutrients, particularly diets high in sugar and saturated fats, is expected to increase understanding of the pathogenesis of non- alcoholic fatty liver disease, a chronic condition that affects approximately one-third of the US population. Thus, the proposed research is relevant to the part of the NIH's mission that pertains to developing fundamental knowledge that will help to reduce the burdens of the current epidemic of obesity and type 2 diabetes.
