Improve prediction and care of cardiometabolic outcomes in individuals with severe mental illness

Description: The purpose of this research is to investigate cardiometabolic diseases, including cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes (T2D), in individuals with severe mental illness (SMI). Individuals with SMI, such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, experience higher rates of multimorbidity and a reduced life expectancy, largely due to cardiometabolic conditions. Despite existing guidelines for early screening and risk stratification, individuals with SMI continue to face disparities in healthcare access, prevention, and treatment, particularly for CVD and T2D.The project will be conducted by an interdisciplinary team with expertise in SMI, cardiometabolic disease, and advanced epidemiological methods. Using comprehensive national registers and advanced machine learning techniques, we will analyze data from individuals diagnosed with T2D and CVD, assessing outcomes in the context of SMI. The research is organized into two aims: (1) advancing the understanding of cardiometabolic risk management for individuals with SMI, and (2) developing and validating prediction tools to identify individuals at high risk for poor cardiometabolic outcomes and treatment adherence. This research is crucial for improving the clinical outcomes and quality of life for individuals with SMI, offering novel insights into risk prediction and management strategies that could significantly reduce health disparities and improve long-term health outcomes.
