AMPK, SIRT1 and mTOR:Mediators of Nutrient Excess
Description: The metabolic syndrome underlies such disorders as type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, hypertension and Alzheimer's disease and probably contributes to accelerated aging. We have identified three fuel sensing and signaling molecules, AMPK, SIRT1, and mTORC1 whose dysregulation could contribute to these disorders. The proposed studies will explore at a molecular level how these molecules interact with each other and in turn, how their activation (or inhibition) could diminish insulin resistance, a hallmark of the metabolic syndrome, caused by nutrient excess.
