The Band-Frail Pilot Study: Intervention to Outweigh Diabetes and Frailty in Fredericton
Description: Type 2 diabetes is a disease in which your body does not properly use the insulin it makes or cannot make enough insulin, which results in high blood sugar. This long-terms high blood sugar has detrimental health consequences. Frailty is a health issue where the person is less able to manage physical and mental stressors, which also leads to health issues. As people are getting older, they often get both conditions, which makes them more vulnerable. Therefore, the objective of the current study will be to look at the effects of an elastic band strength training program along with education about diabetes on people living with type 2 diabetes and frailty. This study is a pilot project at the University of New Brunswick and will be the first location for this multisite study. The program will be 16 weeks and be given by a diabetes educator. Before and after the program, the participants will have their physical function and blood sugar tested to see what effect the program has on people with type 2 diabetes and frailty. The elastic band exercise program as well as the education session to be used were created by Diabetes Canada in 2012. This program is important since the proportion of individuals with Type 2 diabetes and frailty is constantly increasing as well as their associated health issues.
