Metabolic Phenotyping in Live Models of Obesity and Diabetes
Description: Project Narrative – Overall Diabetes, obesity, and associated complications account for a major share of disease burden and health care costs nationwide. The Michigan Metabolic Phenotyping in Live Models of Obesity and Diabetes Center (MPMOD) will provide standardized, high quality and state-of-the-art in vivo phenotyping services for investigators ̶with focus on underrepresented PIs and small laboratories that have not received significant federal research funding ̶to boost the development of novel therapeutic strategies. The advanced phenotyping services include hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamps with tracers, indirect calorimetry with dietary and environmental temperature challenges, ultradian hormone analysis (automated blood sampling from freely- moving undisturbed mice) and behavioral measurements (hedonic and homeostatic feeding, obesity-induced depression, anxiety, etc).
