Cell autonomous versus non-cell autonomous aging in intestinal decline and tumorigenesis
Description: Project Narrative The intestine demonstrates several phenotypes which are indicative of a decline in homeostasis and function. Furthermore, these alterations may be requisite in the increased incidence of tumorigenesis with aging. Utilizing parabiosis, we have determined that these phenotypes are largely modulated by old blood and hypothesize that this effect requires an altered gut microenvironment. Thus, determining the causal and mechanistic actions of how systemic factors mediate intestinal aging, will shed greater light onto the underlying biology, with relevance to improving human health.
