The mechanical and ionic roles of cochlear fluids in hearing and hearing loss
Description: Narrative In normal hearing the understanding of speech depends upon the ability of the organ of Corti to properly process the information content of sound. In the context of this proposal, the processing requires the correct system components (e.g., fluid hydrodynamics) as well as the biochemical components the control the elusive mechanical/physiological character of the tectorial membrane. Among the components, two are chosen for study in this proposal. The effect of perilymph viscosity and tectorial membrane calcium buffering. These have not yet been investigated and the resulting new information can lead to insights into hearing loss treatment strategies.
