Thermodynamic stability of methane-carbon dioxide hydrate and ejection of methane on the Mars
Description: In this study, a method was developed to evaluate the thermodynamic stability of clathrate hydrates to host waters and guest species. This allows us to investigate the complete phase behavior of clathrate hydrates in the entire space of thermodynamic variables, including composition as well as temperature and pressure, with only intermolecular interactions as input parameters. This method was used to determine the complete phase diagram of the clathrate hydrate, especially the regions bounded by the hydrate/hydrate and hydrate/guest phase boundaries where the clathrate hydrate is the only stable phase. This method was applied to the methane clathrate hydrate and the dissociation pressure was found to be in good agreement with the experimental results.
