The Role of Homeostenosis in Bulbar Function in ALS and Aging

Description: PUBLIC HEALTH RELEVANCE: Homeostasis, or stability within the body is important for optimal functioning, however, the loss of the ability to maintain homeostasis and the subsequent effect on ideal swallowing function is not understood. The proposed study will provide an understanding of how the loss of the functional reserves that regulate homeostasis contributes to swallowing impairment in ALS and the frail elderly. This research is relevant to public health since the results will help facilitate the development of biologically informed therapeutics to treat swallowing dysfunction in a variety of patient populations in the future.
