Cerebral Autoregulation, Metabolic derangement, and Edema in Encephalopathy Outcome (CAMEEO)
Description: Project Narrative Episodes of altered mental status, from slight confusion to delirium to coma, are a leading complication of acute medical illness in hospitalized patients and are associated with increased risk of death, long-term cognitive impairment, and increased risk of vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s dementia. This study seeks to improve understanding of the mechanisms that govern the brain’s pathologic response (encephalopathy and delirium) to the metabolic derangements during acute medical illness and how those mechanisms influence cognitive impairment and subsequently increased risk for developing early vascular dementia, Alzheimer’s dementia, or other related dementias after acute medical illness.
