Protein Signatures of APOE2 and Cognitive Aging
Description: Narrative The prevalence of late onset Alzheimer’s disease, dementias, and cognitive decline is growing with the aging population, and reliable plasma biomarkers for early diagnosis of cognitive impairment, monitoring of disease, and for suggesting therapeutic targets are lacking. This proposal will generate proteomic and free fatty acids data in plasma of a unique cohort of centenarians, their offspring and controls to elucidate the role of the protective allele of APOE in preservation of cognitive functions. The results of our analyses will provide new insights into the biological mechanisms that translate the “good” APOE allele into neuroprotective mechanisms and possibly open new avenues to healthy cognitive aging therapeutics.
