Characterization and functional assessment of a novel population of Wnt/beta-catenin driven adopocytes.
Description: Project Narrative Adipose/fat tissue plays essential roles in maintaining whole-body metabolic homeostasis and its dysregulation causes obesity and many associated metabolic disorders. In this proposal, we will define the identity of a novel population of adipocytes that exist in various fat depots and exhibit potentially high metabolic and thermogenic properties. We will also assess overall impacts of these adipocytes on adipose tissue function, whole-body metabolic homeostasis, and protection of obesity. Results obtained will not only provide new insight into the biology of adipocytes, but also implicate these adipocytes as an important cell source and a therapeutic target in the treatment of obesity.
