Tyrosine degradation pathway in mitochondrial dysfunction and aging

Description: Project narrative Recently, there has been significant interest in how metabolism changes with age and how these changes affect different age-related processes. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying these changes and whether these alterations can be reverted, preferable with currently available FDA-approved drugs is unknown. We propose to identify specific transcription factors that drive the age-dependent reprogramming of tyrosine metabolism and the production of tyrosine-derived neurotransmitters using Drosophila as a model system and test whether a similar mechanism is responsible for the age-dependent decrease of tyrosine-derived neurotransmitters in mammals including humans.
