Maternal Obesity and Pediatric NAFLD: Fetal Origins and Long-term outcomes in Non Human Primates
Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE Maternal obesity is a strong risk factor for pediatric nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which affects 35% of obese youth and up to 10% of all children. Using a nonhuman primate model of maternal obesity, we will investigate mechanisms by which maternal western style diet can reprogram immune cells and liver beginning in fetuses to promote NAFLD and liver fibrosis in juvenile offspring. The results of this study will have direct clinical and translational implications for understanding and potentially halting pediatric NAFLD.
