Community Mobility
Description: The least active segment of our population is older adults, and in Canada, the direct cost is enormous. My research program addresses the trend toward less active, more sedentary behaviors and reduced community participation in Canadas oldest citizens. I work with older adults, family caregivers, and health providers to deliver and evaluate sustainable physical activity interventions that target mobility-disability, and translate findings into new knowledge (e.g., guidelines, messaging) to reduce injury and increase quality of life at systems level. My clinical (physiotherapy) and academic (physical activity and psychology) training provide a solid foundation to address these issues. Given the aging demographic it is imperative that we find ways to reduce mobility loss and support people to live independently in later life. Reduced quality of life and health care costs will otherwise be overwhelming -- thus this collaborative research is timely and important.
