Phosphatidylcholine and cholesterol ester biomarkers of type 2 diabetes and preventive treatment effects
Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE Type 2 diabetes (T2D) can be successfully prevented or delayed in high-risk individuals with behavioral or pharmacologic intervention, however, there is a significant amount of inter-individual differences in the effect of these treatments. The goal of this proposal is to identify new molecular pathways involved in the development of diabetes—some of which could modulate the effect of preventive interventions—through integrating genetics, metabolomics, and clinical phenotypes and endpoints from a completed randomized control trial of diabetes prevention treatments. In parallel with these aims, a pilot prospective cohort study is proposed to externally validate these metabolites as biomarkers for incident T2D and glycemic traits in a real-world population of individuals with prediabetes that will provide a framework for a future clinical biomarker trial.
