Compensatory Mitochondrial Protective Mechanisms Against Oxidative Stress in PD

Description: Narrative Parkinson’s disease (PD) is an incurable neurodegenerative disorder (ND) affecting over a million Americans but no effective treatment options are available to slow down the progression of the disease mainly due to the lack of an in-depth mechanistic understanding of the complex neurodegenerative processes underlying the disease. The research proposed here will identify a novel protective mitochondrial and nuclear subcellular signaling network mediated by protein kinase D1 activation, which is inherent in dopaminergic neurons during the early stages of neuronal oxidative stress (OS). The outcome of this research program will help devise a new treatment strategy that can intervene early in the progression of this debilitating disease.
