Data-driven modelling of bone morphology and mineral density
Description: Osteoporotic fractures are life-altering events, potentially leading to death. Currently, one in three women over 50 experience such fractures. Developing new treatments demands a thorough understanding of bone adaptation and dysfunction. This project aims to reveal how population variation in bone morphology, a poorly understood area, relates to bone remodeling-a crucial process for optimal bone function. The central hypothesis is that external mechanical forces influence bone morphology and mineral density variation, detectable through clinical CT scans. By treating force modulation as latent factors and combining chemo-mechanical modeling with data-driven random fields, we want to identify patients' physiological loading states from CT scans. This groundbreaking approach could transform osteoporosis treatment by providing crucial information for early and precise individual treatment and enhancing modern in-silico drug prediction models.
