Leveraging cell-instructive hydrogels to understand microenvironmental impact on wound healing processes

Description: Narrative The natural wound microenvironment and the biomaterials implanted to support its healing present complex biophysical and biochemical properties that must be navigated by invading endothelial cells, fibroblasts, and mesenchymal stromal cells during tissue repair. Hydrogels with tailorable properties like the one we propose to use allow the controlled culture of relevant cells in biomimetic environments allowing fundamental insights into cell behavior and their sensitivity to microenvironmental features. Our proposed projects will advance the basic understanding of endothelial cell invasion leading to angiogenesis, fibroblast activation leading to fibrotic scarring, and stromal cell paracrine signaling in wound-mimicking environments, ultimately enabling the discovery of broadly applicable tissue regenerative therapies.
