PrEP and ART adherence monitoring using dried blood spots
Description: PUBLIC HEALTH RELEVANCE: Inadequate adherence to HIV pre-exposure chemoprophylaxis (PrEP) and antiretroviral therapy (ART) is common, and the leading cause of therapeutic failure. Better ways are needed to measure adherence in patients. This application will validate a new way to monitor adherence to tenofovir-based PrEP and ART using a long-lasting metabolite of tenofovir, called tenofovir-diphosphate in dried blood spots. We believe that this new measure can diagnose adherence problems preemptively, allowing for proactive interventions to improve patient outcomes.
