Skeletal Muscle Stem Cells and Regeneration

Description: The Skeletal Muscle Stem Cells and Regeneration Conference is part of the Federation of American Societies of Experimental Biology (FASEB) Summer Research Conference series. Muscle stem cells (MuSCs) are the source of the remarkable regenerative capacity of skeletal muscle, which is impaired in several muscle disorders, both of genetic etiology (e.g., muscular dystrophies) and of other etiology (e.g., the inflammatory myopathies, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and disorders of the neuromuscular junction). The conference will showcase both basic research and translational work exploring paths to develop stem cells and iPSCs for the treatment of muscular dystrophy. The program includes speakers from around the world and will cover, over eight Plenary Sessions: molecular regulation of MuSCs, MuSCs and regeneration in muscle disease, exercise and aging, dynamics of muscle regeneration and translation of MuSCs for therapeutic applications. There will also be four Poster Sessions, which will be preceded by a Poster Blitz session. Additionally, there will be three career-oriented Workshops and Meet the Expert sessions during meals where trainees will have an opportunity to informally meet with senior scientists and discuss any topics related to the conference. As further detailed in the next section, this conference is highly relevant to MDA’s mission. The funding that we request will allow us to offer travel grants to postdocs and graduate students.
