Glycolytic Metabolism and Cellular Function in Monocytes from Older Adults

Description: Aging is associated with a variety of diseases, including cardiovascular disease. Many of these conditions are caused by inflammation, and aging increases the proportion of inflammatory monocytes in the circulation, which are in turn strong predictors of chronic disease development. Increased glycolytic energy production in immune cells is linked to inflammation, but metabolism has not been investigated in aging and monocyte function. We aim to determine if the aging process alters monocyte glycolytic function in human subjects, if this causes increased monocyte inflammation, and if there are differences in signaling pathway activation in aged monocytes in response to an inflammatory stimulus.
