Endogenous Repair
Description: Every two minutes one Canadian over the age of 65 will experience a fall-related injury. Frequently
this results in hospitalization, loss of independence, or in some cases, death. The goal of the
proposed CRC research program is to develop therapeutics that increase muscle strength after
injury as a strategy to overcome a risk factor of senior falls. To achieve this goal, Dr. Gilbert will use
hypothesis-driven research to identify molecules that target and rejuvenate muscle stem cells
within aging skeletal muscle. These efforts will be supported by inventing a miniaturized human
skeletal muscle tissue model of aging for hypothesis testing.
