Advancing Preventive Care for Healthy Aging
Description: This project addresses older adults' low use of preventive services. Canada's population is getting older rapidly but not necessarily in a healthy way. Many older adults have chronic illnesses, often reducing their quality of life and requiring costly healthcare. Taking action to promote healthy aging is needed. One approach is helping older adults get the preventive services they need based on their age and sex. Preventive services include screening for chronic illnesses like cancer and preventing illness through vaccinations. Older adults have more preventive services to keep up-to-date on than younger adults, and the number of preventive services changes from early to older adulthood. Older adults face many barriers to meeting their preventive care needs. This project will include three parts. The first part will look at the literature to identify components of approaches that have helped older adults increase their use of preventive services. The second part will meet with older adults and those who support them in getting preventive services to discuss what the literature says, what could be used, and how to develop a useful approach. The third part will be a planning meeting with older adults and a range of people who work with them and support them in their preventive activities. The meeting will be structured to develop an agreement on the design of an approach to promote preventive care that considers the unique needs of older adults as they age. The meeting will also establish the next steps for testing the approach with older adults.
