Cytosolic DNA is the Link Between Genomic Instability and Cardiovascular Aging

Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE Aging is associated with the breakdown of the DNA in the nucleus of the cells. The broken pieces of DNA are released into the cytoplasm of the cells, where it is sensed by a set of specific proteins that initiate a cascade of events that leads to inflammation and aging of cells, organs, and organisms. Our goals are to identify the sites of these DNA breaks in the heart cells, characterize features of the cytosolic DNA, and block the activated pathway to assess its effects on the biological process related to aging.
