Impact of mTor on the aging periodontium and inflammation
Description: Project Narrative Aging is associated with chronic inflammation called inflammaging, which contributes to periodontal disease that afflicts more than 6 out of 10 people over the age of 65.1- 6,15 The goal of this proposal is to define the molecular mechanisms by which aging and inflammaging contribute to periodontal disease and decline in oral health. This will be accomplished by testing the hypothesis that aberrant signaling through the mTOR growth promoting pathway drives inflammation in the oral cavity and evaluating the impact of rapamycin, an FDA approved inhibitor of mTOR, on progression of age- associated periodontal disease in mice.
