Reproductive Hormones in Skeletal Muscle Aging in Rhesus Monkeys

Description: PUBLIC HEALTH RELEVANCE: Sarcopenia, the age-associated loss of muscle mass, is a major contributor to physical frailty in the elderly and may be associated with age-associated declines in the reproductive hormone axis. We will utilize rhesus monkeys, a highly translatable aging model, to elucidate the basis for sarcopenia onset and progression and its relationship to reproductive hormone suppression. The use of this highly translatable aging model will ensure that the data generated are highly relevant for human health.
