Thioredoxin interacting protein is critical for development of early diabetic retinopathy
Description: Project Narrative: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a severe complication of the eyes leading to blindness; yet there is no cure. Our laboratory is exploring ways to prevent DR by targeting a protein called thioredoxin-interacting protein (TXNIP), its downstream mediators and mitophagy, a process for removing damaged mitochondria, which is an organelle for energy production in cells. We propose that TXNIP-mediated gene therapy is a potential approach for treating DR.
