Mitochondrial DNA Stress Activation of Interferon Signaling and Lupus Pathology
Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE Mitochondria are essential cell components that generate energy and house DNA inherited from your mother. We recently discovered that stressed mitochondria release their mitochondrial DNA and activate the immune system. This project will characterize this new mitochondrial stress pathway and determine if it is involved in the autoimmune disease lupus using mouse models of lupus and human lupus patient samples.
