2nd International Conference on the Prevention of Alzheimer's Disease (ICOPAD 2026)
Description: Currently, more than 55 million people are living with dementia worldwide, a number projected to reach 139 million by 2050 with the ageing global population (DOI: 10.1016/S2468-2667(21)00249-8). There is increasing evidence supporting the notion of risk reduction through multi-domain interventions to reduce dementia risk for cognitively unimpaired individuals at risk of developing cognitive decline (DOI: 10.1016/S0140-6736(15)60461-5). In 2020, recommendations and a roadmap were produced for establishing clinical services dedicated to this mission. The proposed Brain Health Services for dementia prevention (dBHS) model is built on 3 pillars: risk assessment, risk communication, risk reduction. A conference on dBHS was held in Geneva in February 2024 to foster healthcare providers and clinical experts into action to launch pilot dBHSs. The result of the conference was a publication on a peer-reviewed international journal outlining the challenges and opportunities for their implementation in the clinic around Europe (DOI: 10.1016/j.tjpad.2025.100098). ICOPAD26 is the continuation of this effort and will convene those experts who are developing programs to bring evidence from the three pillars of the dBHS in clinical practice. Participants will learn about the underlying the notions of the clinical practice of the risk assessment, risk communication, risk reduction of cognitively unimpaired persons. They will also hear the experience of early adopters and how the concept is being implemented in the clinic, including the use of blood biomarkers, lifestyle interventions and other prevention strategies. A workshop among the ICOPAD Working Group (by invitation only) will close the event. The ICOPAD Working Group consisted of 9 centers when the first conference on dBHS was held and now 27 centers from all around the world are involved. This number is expected to rise to 30 centers by February 2026 underscoring the effort in the growing interest and need.
