Defining the microenvironment that will enable a long-term bioprosthetic ovary transplant

Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE Life-saving cancer treatments can destroy the finite source of potential eggs and sex hormone-producing cells, and, therefore, ovarian tissue cryopreservation is offered to young girls as the primary fertility preservation method. Hormones and/or fertility can ultimately be restored following transplantation of cryopreserved tissue, but current methods are not suitable for those with cancer cells in the ovary, are not effective in producing children for the majority of individuals and are not long-term solutions for hormone restoration. The goal of this study is to define the microenvironment of the bank of potential eggs in order to develop an engineered ovarian transplant that restores safe, effective and long-term function for cancer survivors.
