The gut-brain axis and age-related microglial cell dysfunction

Description: PROJECT NARRATIVE Aging predisposes brain microglia to a pro-inflammatory state that is associated with cognitive and motor impairment, mood disorders, and disability. The goal of the proposed research is to determine the role of the gut-brain axis in regulating age-related changes in microglial cell activity. The long-term goal is to envision a new strategy to prevent or treat unwarranted neuroinflammation in the aged brain.
